Before the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century , the Incas dominated the north of Chile, while the indigenous Mapuche inhabited the center and south of the country. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, the decisive victory over the Spaniards was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-83), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia, and won its current northern regions. It was not until the 1880s that the Mapuche Indians were completely subdued. After a series of elected governments, the three-year-old Marxist government of Don Salvador Allende was overthrown in 1973 by a military coup led by Don Augusto Pinochet, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Economic policies successful, maintained since the 1980s, have contributed to sustained growth, the reduction of poverty rates to more than half, and have helped to ensure the commitment of the country to a democratic and representative government.
